TMJ - Bonita Springs, FL
Causes and Treatment Options for TMJ
Your temporomandibular joint is a hinge that connects your jaw to the temporal bones of your skull, in front of each ear. This joint allows you to move your jaw up and down and side-to-side, so you can do simple things such as chewing, talking and even yawning.
A problem with your jaw or the muscles in your face is known as temporomandibular disorder or TMD. Some people call it TMJ, after the joint.
Symptoms of TMJ
What are the symptoms of TMJ?
- Pain or tenderness in your face, jaw joint area, neck, shoulders, and around the ear
- Problems opening your mouth wide
- Tension headaches, migraines
- Jaws that get “stuck” or tend to “lock up”
- Popping or clicking sounds when you open or close your mouth to chew
- Difficulty chewing or a sudden uncomfortable bite
A Variety of Options
At Bonita Dental Care, our dentists specialize in TMD and facial pain treatment, and are able to offer a wide range of options to help our patients. After a complete exam our dentist may decide to perform a sinus CT scan, or digital panoramic X-ray. They will then discuss the various options you have based on their clinical findings. Unlike other clinics, our dentists don’t always recommend wearing a splint. With very little scientific data on splint therapy for TMJ problems, we feel there are many other treatments that are effective in relieving jaw pain and other TMJ symptoms. We do, however, perform equilibrations, full mouth equilibrations, and canine contact and guidance therapy. By establishing a proper bite relationship between the teeth, we can ease the strain of TMJ disorder and help you protect your future smile.
